More Than a Game: Why Golf Works as a Tool for Inclusion

Why Golf? Using Golf for Autism Awareness in Nigeria

At first glance, using golf for autism awareness in Nigeria may seem unusual. Many people see golf as exclusive, quiet and limited to a select few.

So, why golf?

At Play With Stephen, we chose golf with purpose.

Golf Creates Space for Connection

Golf offers something many fast-moving sports do not: space.

Its steady pace reduces pressure. The quiet setting also supports focus, reflection and meaningful conversations.

Players can take part at their own pace. They have time to process their surroundings and develop their skills. No one needs to rush through the experience.

Of course, every person experiences autism differently. However, a calm and flexible environment can make participation more comfortable.

Inclusion grows when people feel seen, respected and free to be themselves. With careful planning, a golf event can create that kind of space.

Yet golf offers more than a calm environment. It also brings influential people together.

Turning the Golf Course Into a Platform for Change

The golf course can change how people connect.

Professionals, executives, athletes and community leaders often spend several hours together during a game. Away from formal meetings, they have more time to listen, share ideas and build relationships.

As a result, conversations can become more open and meaningful.

Play With Stephen brings together sport, influence and social impact. We use golf to start important conversations, challenge assumptions and promote autism inclusion across Africa.

Our goal goes beyond playing golf. We also want to open doors and welcome new people into the sport. Most importantly, we want to create spaces where understanding can grow.

Through these experiences, one day on the course can inspire lasting action.

The Autism Kitty: Awareness in Action

The Autism Kitty puts this purpose into action.

It is a dedicated awareness hub at Play With Stephen events. Here, golfers can learn, ask questions and explore what genuine autism inclusion requires.

The Autism Kitty does not lecture people. Instead, it creates a welcoming space for honest conversations.

Many people who can influence the culture of golf already spend time on the course. Therefore, we meet them there and give them a meaningful opportunity to engage.

Through the Autism Kitty, Play With Stephen turns autism awareness into a shared experience.

Creating an Entry Point Through the Golf Tasting & Masterclass

New participants need a clear and welcoming entry point before the tournament begins.

That is why our Golf Tasting & Masterclass matters.

The event allows first-time participants to step onto the course and learn the basics of golf. It also helps them feel comfortable in a space they may have once considered inaccessible.

For some people, this will be their first experience of golf. For others, it will offer a new way to understand autism awareness and inclusion.

Either way, the experience can change how participants view the sport. It can also change how they think about inclusion.

Building Autism Awareness Through Shared Experiences

April marks Autism Awareness Month. Therefore, it is an important time to create spaces that encourage learning, participation and support.

Awareness cannot grow from a distance. It develops when people share experiences, ask questions and listen to one another.

Golf gives us a platform for these connections. We use it to build something that reaches far beyond the game.

By bringing autism advocacy onto the golf course, Play With Stephen introduces the conversation to new audiences. We also encourage influential members of the community to support inclusion in practical ways.

This is how we are using golf for autism awareness in Nigeria: one conversation, one experience and one swing at a time.

Join the Conversation at Lakowe Lakes

Join us on April 25 at Lakowe Lakes Golf & Country Estate for the Play With Stephen Golf Tasting & Masterclass.

Experience the game, visit the Autism Kitty and join an important conversation about autism awareness and inclusion in Nigeria.

You do not need any previous golf experience. Whether you are a beginner or simply curious, this event offers a welcoming place to start.

More importantly, it offers an opportunity to support a cause that goes far beyond the course.

If the experience inspires you to continue supporting the autism community, we will be ready to welcome you.
